Sweet rentalLessons from Mom that Made Me a Better Renter
From roommates and landlords, from security deposits to maintenance, renting comes with some hefty (and sometimes costly) life lessons. Undoubtedly the more prepared you are going into your rental journey, the better off you are. Nearly 20 years into my rental journey, I still find myself being guided on how to rent better from my most trusted advisor, my mom. This weekend as we take the time to stop and give thanks for our amazing moms, newly minted renters take time to recognize the impact of lessons from mom on renting.
“Your home is a representation of you”
My mom has taught me a lot about how to keep my rental clean and nice. Not only because it just feels better to live in a clean space, but also to prevent set-in stains on furniture, appliances, counters, etc.
My mom has probably told me a million times ‘Organization leads to success, successful people are organized.’ When I was at home I thought of this in terms of being on time for appointments or turning in school work. Now that I am on my own, this principle has translated into paying rent on time, having copies or what my landlord said he would do. I am so thankful she taught me such a broad lesson, because being organized really have made me a more successful renter.
My mother taught me to keep my house clean and keep everything in an orderly fashion. She taught me to keep everything in order and to pay early or at least on time
You never know who is going to stop by, it could be your friends, but it could be your landlord. Be prepared to put your best foot forward. How you maintain your rental today could be the difference between whether you get your security deposit back at the end of your lease.
“Always make decisions that prioritize your needs.”
My mom has also taught me how to cook in a simplified kitchen with limited appliances and space (at school I have a fridge, oven, microwave, and some cabinets to keep things in).
Finding a perfect rental was challenging. My mom helped me manage expectations. The nice thing about most rentals is you are living one year at a time, so she helped me consider what was important to me now, and what I could wait to be a goal for the next rental. This helped me to enjoy my current rental by not living beyond my means, but also set goals for the future.
I was lucky that she taught me how to do an efficient move from a young age, so when I moved out alone I was able to get it done quickly and comfortably. My mom helped make sure I was all set up with everything I may need for my first place, and had all the things you take for granted when you’re young. She gave me advice on which towels to get, or whether or not I really needed a blender. The little stuff you overlook when you are starting out.
Signing a lease brings you to a whole new level of responsibility, but paying your rent isn’t your only responsibility. Your rental is a small piece of a much bigger picture. Maybe you are renting a place to keep you close to school or a new job. Perhaps you chose your rental to come to a new city that you have dreamed of living in. Regardless of what your big goals are, it’s important to remember your rental is one piece to that puzzle. Keep what you need from a rental and tailor your rental around those needs.
“A moms hug lasts long after she lets go”
Moving out and moving up is a wonderful thing, successfully gaining independence is something to be proud of. While having your own rental is exciting, living with mom can be the hardest amenity to give up.
One thing I miss is her food and how simple she made it for me instead of cleaning everything I had to keep my own room in order.
Happy Mother’s Day Mom!
“Cookies, really all her cooking, but especially her cookies.”
Being able to walk out to the kitchen with whatever problem I’m having and talk to mom about the best way forward.I can still always send a text or call to ask questions about how to fix something or what to do with my landlord, but I do miss being able to just sit and talk it through.
Happy Mother’s Day to the Best Mom a girl could ask for!
I miss a lot of things about living with my mom, especially with college in a pandemic. It was really hard to not be near anyone who could just *get* me. As an engineering student I get very stressed, very quickly, and very easily so not having that emotional support in times when I wasn’t feeling 100% was really hard for me, but I suppose it is just a part of growing up and learning to manage on your own. However, it would have been cool to have my mom there for those times.
Happy Mother’s Day!
I definitely didn’t appreciate things like having a warm meal made for me each night, or being able to get help with chores when I was really busy. Someone you can always lean on when you need help right there waiting to catch you.
Happy Mother’s Day, Mom!
Happy Mother’s Day to all the Wonderful Moms!
Mom, you were our first roommate, our best landlord, and a world-class property advisor. Thank you for everything you do and for making us better at what we do. Happy Mother’s Day!
